West Van Volley

Breadth: A piece that represents the range and extent of your skills and abilities, possibly from an area you are building capacity in.

Project Description:

  • I co-founded West Van Volley to merge my passion for volleyball with leadership and entrepreneurship.
  • I developed our WIX website, built our visual brand in Canva, and created social media content and other promotional materials.
  • I managed marketing, registration, operations, and professional communication with families, applying business and communications principles from my TRU education to transform an idea into a successful community-based venture.

So, what is West Van Volley?

This past summer, my sister Macy and I launched West Van Volley, week-long volleyball summer camps for athletes ages 10-18 on Vancouver’s North Shore. We grew up playing volleyball in West Vancouver and wanted to share our knowledge, experience and love of the game with the next generation.

During four weeks of camp, we worked with athletes of all skill levels. With a mix of high-energy drills, skill development, and competitive gameplay, we created a fun and supportive environment for beginners and more advanced players alike. Running our own camps gave us hands-on experience in everything from program design and marketing to registration management and communication with families. It was an exciting challenge to take on the planning and logistics side of things while still doing what we love most: coaching and connecting with young athletes.

How does this connect to my education at TRU?

Even though this is a passion project of mine, my education at TRU played a direct role in its success. Through my Communications coursework, I developed skills in branding, audience awareness, and professional writing that helped me market our camps effectively and communicate clearly with families.

Design experience using Canva for class projects gave me the confidence to create our logo, social media graphics, registration materials, and even custom camp t-shirts. Courses like MNGT 1710: Intro to Business helped me understand the fundamentals of launching and managing a small venture — from identifying a target market to thinking strategically about growth and value.

Most importantly, TRU strengthened my professionalism. Writing polished emails, organizing information, and maintaining a consistent tone with parents all reflected the communication standards I’ve practiced throughout my degree.

West Van Volley allowed me to apply what I’ve learned in real time, turning classroom knowledge into hands-on entrepreneurial experience.
